G4DCH Mobile Antennas
Hello and welcome to my web pages. My name is Chris Tucker and I have been into radio and antennas since I was in my early teens.
For many years now I have been interested in experimenting with HF mobile antennas. I started with a simple base loaded antenna which had very questionable results.
This lead to experimentation with centre loaded coils, firstly lower Q close wound antennas and laterly with more open wound larger diameter coils with much higher Qs and better efficiency.
All the antennas I make are made from locally available materilas either from DIY stores, Supermarkets and Component stores such as Maplins. The cost of all my antennas ranges from between £10 to £15, most of the cost being bourne by the amount of wire used.
All the antennas have been designed for mobile use not just portable. I use my antennas both static and mobile up to speeds of at least 70mph. Most have now been on my car for over a year without any detrimental effects.
The following pages take you through the design and construction of these antennas. They are designed to give people ideas and encouragement to build the natennas. Since all vehicles are different and earth return paths can very depending on the size of the vehicle then all coil and matching dimensions should only be used as a guide.
As well as my mobile antennas you can also find details of other antenna and radio projects I have been involved in, as well as building tips and where to find materials.
Anyway good luck and let us know how you get on. especially if you hear me on one of the bands and you are using one of my designs.
Chris
